Teenager accused of murdering his mother rejects 40-year plea deal

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – “Miss Gregg, did you receive this recommendation 40 years ago?” Judge Dewey Arthur asked Carly Gregg.

“Yes, sir,” Gregg replied.

“And it was your decision, and your decision alone, to reject that recommendation?” asked Judge Arthur.

“Yes, Your Honor,” said Gregg.

The teenager rejected a 40-year plea deal and decided to put her fate in the hands of a Rankin County jury.

Gregg is accused of killing her mother, Ashley Smilye, and shooting her stepfather in March.

Judge Dewey Arthur told Gregg, “The jury will either acquit you, or you will face two life sentences, or the court can sentence you to up to 93 years.”

According to Gregg's attorney, a change in medication before the shooting and other mental health issues may have contributed to her behavior.

Attorney Bridget Todd told WLBT 3 On Your Side that Gregg's stepfather is standing by her side.

“He was also very honest in his testimony about it, even when he was shot, Carly didn't recognize him,” Todd said. “He didn't recognize him at all. He knew something was wrong and that's one of the reasons he decided to stand by Carly even though he was the victim.”

Gregg's trial is scheduled to begin on September 16.
