3 sisters from Guatemala killed in car crash in Denton County

Three sisters from Guatemala have been identified as victims of last Friday's fatal crash on I-35 in Denton County.

Authorities said two of the sisters flew in from Guatemala to visit their sister, who lived in Northlake.

When police arrived on the scene, other drivers performed CPR on the victims until ambulances arrived.

A couple from Ponder witnessed the accident with their children in the car and tried to save the three sisters who were killed.

According to police, traffic on I-35W was already very slow just before 7 p.m. last Friday due to another accident further north in Denton.

Then two collisions involving six vehicles occurred near the Crawford Road exit.

The crime scene attracted half a dozen police officers from Argyle, Northlake, Roanoke, Trophy Club, Keller and Southlake.

On Tuesday, Argyle police confirmed that a pickup truck crashed into the back of an SUV, killing the three sisters, now identified as 65-year-old Elia Orozco of Northlake, 69-year-old Odilla Orozco and 63-year-old Gladis Orozco.

Investigators do not believe alcohol was involved and it is too early to say whether criminal charges will be filed against the driver of the pickup truck.

Former Guatemalan vice presidential candidate Efrain Orozco confirmed on social media that the three women killed were his sisters. He said two of his sisters had flown from Guatemala to northern Texas to visit family.

Tanner and Katie Bachman of Ponder witnessed the accident. Tanner and several other drivers pulled the three sisters from the back seat of the SUV and performed CPR. They later learned that none of them survived.

“I know there's nothing more I or anyone else could have done,” Tanner said. “But you still have that feeling of guilt, like I could have done more.”

Katie ran to the other crash to help other victims, including a man whose hands were bleeding.

“His hands were full of cuts and stuff,” she recalled. “I made sure he was OK. I gave him the shirt so we could put something on the bleeding.”

According to police, at least three other people were injured in the collision and survived. There was no current information on the condition of the survivors.

As for the three sisters, their family is raising money to transport them back to Guatemala.
