Matthew Felker is behind the camera for his latest project, but it hasn't been long since he was seen on screen.

The 44-year-old director and executive producer of the new documentary series After Baywatch: Moment in the sun – premiering August 28 on Hulu – recently reminisced with PEOPLE about 20 years ago when he was a newly minted model and actor and starred in Britney Spears' music video “Toxic.”

“That's actually one of the reasons why I was able to identify with the actors,” Felker told PEOPLE about how his experience in the music video helped him build a relationship with the actors. After Baywatch“Granted, I wasn't on the biggest television show in the world, but that video was kind of a pop culture moment, and kind of like 15 minutes of fame.”

Felker, who shares a steamy make-out session with Spears in the unforgettable music video for “2024,” is proud of how he has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry.

“Many people fight against the things they have become famous for,” said the director. “There are many actors with [Baywatch] who turn away from it because they don't want to be known for it. The Britney Spears thing is flattering. If someone remembers it or knows it, that's great.”

How many of those on the original Baywatch — including Pamela Anderson and Jason Mamoa – Felker came to Hollywood with a dream after being discovered as a model.

“I just moved to California. I just came in by boat from Wisconsin and showed up at Universal to do this,” the model-turned-director recalled of filming the music video. “So, yeah, coming from the Midwest and not having any family ties in the media, just coming here with a dream and showing up on this set. She was still the biggest pop star in the world at the time. So it was very surreal.”

Although Felker is focused on other initiatives, he said he is occasionally reminded of the time he made out with a certain Britney Spears in his mid-twenties.

“I mean, it will be on social media or someone who went to high school [with me]they will send it or they will [the] Creating the video from MTV,” he said.

Giving the stars a voice Baywatch In his new documentary series, Felker said it was important to show that “life happens to everyone,” no matter how hard you try to control it.

“Just because you're a wonderful person doesn't mean you can't enjoy life,” said the executive producer and director. “Life happens to a lot of these people, and we see that.”
