2 employees killed, 1 injured in maintenance incident at Delta Air Lines – On Common Ground News

ATLANTA – Two employees were killed and a third injured when a tire burst in a Delta Air Lines maintenance area at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27.

The deceased were identified by the Clayton County Coroner's Office as Mirko Marweg, 58, and Luis Aldarondo, 37.

The employees were team members of Delta TechOps, which handles airline maintenance and repairs. Authorities said the incident involved wheel components that were dismantled for maintenance and were not attached to an aircraft at the time of the incident. The incident did not impact airport operations, officials said. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Jwithout laughterExecutive Vice President and Chief of Operations and President of TechOps, sent a message to the TechOps team following the incident, which stated, in part:

“TechOps team,

I am deeply saddened to share that three TechOps team members were involved in an accident that occurred early this morning at Atlanta TOC 3, Dept. 391 – Wheel & Brake Shop. Tragically, two of our team members involved have passed away and another team member sustained serious injuries. We extend our full support to their families during this difficult time and are conducting an investigation to determine what happened.

This news is heartbreaking for all of us. EAP resources will be on-site at the ATL TOC to support our teams for as long as needed.”

Delta Air Lines also released a statement after the fatal incident:

“The Delta family is deeply saddened by the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have pledged our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on the scene. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to find out what happened.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his condolences and thoughts to the families and loved ones of the dead and injured. He said on social media:

“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with the injured and I hope for their speedy and full recovery. The AFRD, APD and HuAIA teams are on site and working diligently to manage the situation.”

Byron Amos, Atlanta City Council member for the 3rd District, announced:

“As Chairman of the City of Atlanta Transportation Committee, I want to express my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the workers who lost their lives today while working to ensure the safety of passengers at our beloved Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. We stand with those injured and pray for a speedy recovery.”
