Trial against “Girl in the Box” kidnapper postponed until autumn

The trial against Cameron Hooker, which is intended to determine whether he will remain in prison, has been postponed again.

Hooker was found guilty on multiple charges, ranging from kidnapping to sexual assault, for keeping a young woman in Tehama County as a sex slave for seven years in the 1980s. The case gained national notoriety as the “Girl in the Box” case.

Hooker is now eligible for release through the senior citizen parole program, but the Tehama County District Attorney's Office is trying to classify him as a sexually violent offender, which would prevent his release.

The case was originally scheduled for trial before a jury in March of this year, marking the second time the trial has been postponed.

The San Mateo District Attorney is prosecuting the case. His office told us that this time it was because no defense expert was available.

The jury trial is now scheduled to begin on November 15.
