Kangana Ranaut lands in legal trouble and is asked to apologise for 'hurting' Sikhs after emergency trailer is released

Kangana Ranaut has received a legal notice from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) ahead of the release of her upcoming film Emergency. On Tuesday, the SGPC issued the notice to the producers of the film, including Kangana, demanding the removal of the trailer released earlier this month. SGPC secretary Partap Singh has raised objections to the film and said that letters have also been sent to the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification urging them to ban Emergency. He accused the actress of hurting the sentiments of Sikhs and claimed that the trailer of the film contains several “anti-Sikh scenes”.

The notice, sent by advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, legal advisor to the SGPC, has asked the film's producers, including Kangana Ranaut, to remove the trailer released on August 14 from all public and social media platforms. They have also been asked to submit a written apology to the Sikh community.

A legal notice has been served on the producers of the film, including Kangana Ranaut, who is also a BJP MP from Mandi, on the instructions of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami. He said that after the release of the film's trailer, many “anti-Sikh scenes have come to light which have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community”.

Last week, the GDPC and Akhal Takht demanded an immediate ban on the film as it allegedly attempts to “denigrate” Sikhs through negative portrayal. Dhami held a press conference to demand a complaint against Kangana Ranaut and expressed strong objections to the film. He urged the inclusion of Sikh representatives in the censor board to ensure fair review.

Kangana Ranaut announced Emergency in 2021, clarifying that while it is a political drama, it is not a biopic on Indira Gandhi. Kangana not only plays the lead role but also directs the film. The cast includes Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry and Shreyas Talpade. Shreyas Talpade will portray Atal Bihari Vajpayee while Anupam Kher will play Jayaprakash Narayan. Late actor Satish Kaushik will appear as Jagjivan Ram, the former deputy prime minister of India.
