Judge rejects guilty plea of man accused of murder in Waterville

PORTLAND (WGME) – A judge on Tuesday rejected a guilty plea in a murder at Damon's Beverage in Waterville last year.

The family of victim Angela Bragg appeared emotionally upset outside the courtroom on Tuesday.

“Some people need to understand that some people are evil,” said daughter Kaitlyn Bragg.

Kaitlyn Bragg was angry that her mother's suspected killer was not allowed to plead guilty on Tuesday.

Spridal Hubiak, 21, is accused of killing 52-year-old Angela Bragg at Damon's Beverage, where the two worked.

Hubiak wanted to change his plea to guilty on Tuesday, but the judge refused because Hubiak wanted to plead guilty against the advice of his lawyer.

Instead, Hubiak will undergo a competency assessment.

The motive for the murder was a mystery; the victim's ex-husband said Hubiak was obsessed with Angela Bragg.

“He was infatuated with her,” the ex-husband said. “He was in love with her and wanted to date her. She was 52 and he is 21.”

He says Bragg was an extraordinary person who often took people to him who were in trouble.

Hubiak's next court date is scheduled for October 11, following an assessment of his sanity.
