Woman killed in head-on collision in Tooele

LAKE POINT, Tooele County – A woman was killed in a head-on collision in Tooele County Tuesday afternoon.

According to Corporal Luis Silva of the Utah Highway Patrol, an SUV was on the ramp to westbound I-80 near Lake Point when the driver crossed the center line and collided head-on with a pickup truck.

The 69-year-old driver of the SUV suffered fatal injuries, UHP said. Her identity was not released.

The driver of the pickup truck – a man in his mid-50s – was flown to a hospital in critical condition.

A passerby told KSL he heard the crash, saw car parts flying through the air and got out to check on everyone. The passerby saw that the truck driver was injured and the truck had caught fire.

The passerby flagged down a dump truck driver, asked for a fire extinguisher, and kept the flames under control while another man helped get the driver out of the truck. UHP said the passersby's intervention and the truck driver's seatbelt probably saved the driver's life.

Highway ramps in the area were closed while emergency services arrived on scene.
