15 former Penn State football players released by NFL teams

Tuesday was a rough day for some former Penn State football players. As NFL teams announced their official 53-man rosters, 15 Penn Staters were released or released by their respective teams.

While some of them were non-drafted free agents preparing for their debut, others bring extensive experience.

To help you better follow yesterday's moves, we've compiled a list of former Penn State players who will not have a spot on the roster this season.

Allen Robinson

Wide receiver Allen Robinson was released by the New York Giants before his 11th year in the league. Robinson has also played for the Jaguars, Bears, Rams and Steelers during his NFL career.

Amani Oruwariye

Corner Amani Oruwariye was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday after four seasons with the Detroit Lions. In Detroit, he recorded a total of 173 tackles, nine interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Mitchell Tinsley

After wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent at the end of the 2023 NFL Draft, he did not play last year and did not survive this year's cutsDuring the 2024 preseason, Tinsley recorded six catches for 45 yards.

Adrian Amos

Security Adrian Amos was released by the Jaguars before his 11th year in the NFL. During his career, the wide receiver made a total of 539 tackles for five different teams.

Tariq Castro Fields

After appearing in eight games for the Commanders last season, Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields was released before the 2024 season. Last year, Castro-Fields recorded a total of four tackles.

Sean Clifford

After supporting Jordan Love last year, Sean Clifford was released by the Green Bay Packers. Before Clifford's release, the Packers traded for quarterback Malik Willis. Clifford played twice last year and completed one pass for 37 yards.

KJ Hamler

After finding his way to the Buffalo Bills training camp this preseason, KJ Hamler was released from the team Tuesday afternoon. Hamler also spent three years with the Denver Broncos, where he caught 42 passes for 620 yards.

Trace McSorley

Another Penn State quarterback who did not make the squad, Trace McSorley was released by the commanders before the 2024 season. McSorley spent his first two years with Baltimore, but appeared in six games with the Cardinals during the 2022 season.

PJ Mustipher

After spending the 2023 season with the Saints and later moving to Philadelphia, Defensive Tackle PJ Mustipher will not play for the Eagles this yearDuring his only NFL season so far, Mustipher played in four games and made four total tackles.

Brandon Smith

Linebacker Brandon Smith, originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2022, was also released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. Smith was also with the Eagles last year, playing in two games and making one tackle.

Kalen King

Selected with the penultimate pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Kalen King failed to secure a spot on the Packers roster for the upcoming season. The cornerback had very high expectations for his final year at Penn State, but the numbers didn't live up to expectations and his draft value dropped rapidly. During the NFL preseason, King forced one fumble and made six tackles.

Daequan Hardy

After being selected number 219 in the 2024 NFL Draft, Cornerback Daequan Hardy was released by the Buffalo Bills after the preseason ended. During his preseason playing time, Hardy recorded six tackles.

Keaton Ellis

Safety Keaton Ellis signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans after the 2024 NFL Draft but did not make it into the regular season. Ellis, a native of State College, made three tackles in the preseason.

Curtis Jacobs

Another rookie who did not make the final selection, linebacker Curtis Jacobs was released by the Kansas City ChiefsJacobs didn't play much in the preseason this year and only made three tackles in total.

Daniel Chisena

Wide receiver Dan Chisena was released by the Arizona Cardinals after signing with several teams over the past two years. Chisena originally played for the Vikings and eventually landed with the Arizona Cardinals for the 2022 season. After spending a year on various practice squads, Chisena was cut from the 53-man roster by the Cardinals.
