POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) – The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting near the 700 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue in Pompano Beach. Deputies said they were forced to shoot after an exchange of words between a person and the officer.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers arrived at the scene after receiving a 911 call that an armed man had fired a shot.

When officers arrived, an exchange of words took place between them and the person, at which point, officers say, they were compelled to shoot.

Pompano Beach Fire Department arrived at the scene and transported the man to a nearby hospital where he is currently recovering.

Neighbors said the man was a veteran with military experience and owned weapons.

911 dispatchers told 7News that the man appeared to have been having a mental breakdown, as they remembered him arguing with himself before firing shots.

The man's exact condition was still unknown on Wednesday morning.

No further injuries were reported.

This is a preliminary investigation, so details are limited at this time.
