Julian Prégardien, Sarah Connolly and Emőke Baráth lead CD/DVD releases

Welcome back to our weekly look at the latest CD and DVD releases from the world of opera.

At the end of August there will be a wealth of song albums and new music for the public to discover. Here's a little taster.

The beautiful miller

Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin” is released by Harmonia Mundi with tenor Julian Prégardien and Kristian Bezuidenhout.

This release, a debut for Prégardien on the label, explores Schubert's music through the duo's unique interpretation and exploration of this time-honored music.

In a statement, Prégardien said: “I would like everyone's first encounter with Schubert to be one of empathy and affection. That would be incredible. If I ever have the opportunity in the future to create projects that make that possible, where the first encounter with Schubert is something intimate and personal, that would give me great joy. Because that is exactly what Schubert's songs are – a deeply intimate experience.”

Silenced – Unsung Voices of the 20th Century

Cedille Records releases “Silenced – Unsung Voices of the 20th Century” with tenor Ian Koziara and pianist Bradley Moore. The recording presents works by Franz Schreker, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Viktor Ullmann and Vítězslava Kaprálová.

Also joy

The Vertex Duo, consisting of mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein and pianist Jeremy Chan, releases Joy, Too, a collection of melancholy songs that serve as a testament to the universal experience of grief and offer comfort and understanding to those struggling with its effects.

Brahms Songbook, Volume 2.

Sarah Connolly, Hanno Müller-Brachmann and Malcolm Martineau play five sets of songs that were composed and published over 30 years. In the songs recorded here, Brahms created a heightened emotional world, far removed from the salons and concert halls of the bourgeoisie.

Fauré: Requiem & Gounod: Messe de Clovis

Alpha releases Fauré's Requiem and Gounod's “Messe de Clovis” with soloists Emőke Baráth and Philippe Estèphe. Le Concert Spirituel is conducted by Hervé Niquet.

Joy and Asymmetry: Einojuhani Rautavaara & Kalevi Aho

The Helsinki Chamber Choir is conducted by Nils Schweckendiek and the music is by Einojuhani Rautavaara and Kalevi Aho. The works included on this CD offer an insight into the choral works of these two composers, who reveal not only their stylistic versatility but also their literary curiosity.
