UN fears nuclear accident at “endangered” Russian Kursk nuclear power plant after drone attacks

BRUSSELS – The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog warned Tuesday of an increased risk at the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia, where Ukraine is conducting a military counteroffensive.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi led the mission to the nuclear facility after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed it had come under fire following Ukraine's invasion of the region. Kyiv has denied allegations that the facility was targeted.

“The danger or the possibility of a nuclear accident has emerged around here,” Grossi told reporters, according to Reuters, adding that he had seen evidence of drone attacks in the area during his visit to the power plant.

“I have been informed about the impact of the drones. I have been shown some of their remains and signs of their impact,” Grossi said, without saying who was responsible.
