Iraqi Kurdistan parties condemn killing of two journalists in Turkish drone attack

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Qubad TalabaniThe chairman of the Kurdistan Social Democratic Party, Mohammad Haji Mahmoud, and the Ulaymaniyeh Committee (Silêmanî) of the Communist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (WP) have condemned a recent Turkish drone strike that killed two Kurdish journalists. Talabani called the attack an “unjustifiable crime” and said it was a serious violation of international law and Iraqi sovereignty. He called on both the Iraqi federal government and the international community to act swiftly to prevent further threats to civilian security in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

The outcry was amplified, Muhammad Haji MahmoudChairman of the Kurdistan Social Democratic Party, criticized the ongoing military and security coordination between Iraq and Turkey, warning that it disproportionately targets Kurdish communities and exacerbates regional instability. Mahmoud expressed concern that such actions could drag the Kurds into a wider conflict, with potentially devastating consequences.

The Sulaymaniyeh Committee of the Communist Workers Party of Kurdistan (WP) also condemned the attack and expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased journalists. The WP described the drone attack as a blatant violation of international law and called on the KRG to take decisive action to protect journalists working in the region. The party called on the KRG to break its silence, take a firm stand against these violations and ensure that international laws are respected to protect Kurdish civilians and media workers.
