Prosecutor: Fatal police-involved shooting of Naimmikal Sanders justified

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WAFF) – A police-involved shooting over the weekend that left one man dead was legally justified and likely saved several lives, Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard said Wednesday.

Huntsville police responded to a call in Rime Village on Saturday that ultimately resulted in a police-involved shooting that left 38-year-old Naimmikal Sanders of Decatur dead.

Broussard said Sanders broke into the victim's apartment around 10 a.m. Saturday. The victim was home alone with her toddler.

“He held her hostage at gunpoint for several minutes while he put the gun to her head,” Broussard said. “This was all recorded by a security camera in the apartment.”

According to Broussard, the first Huntsville police officer to respond was outside the apartment door when the victim was able to briefly escape and scream for help.

“Sanders chased her out the front door and fired his weapon at her multiple times in front of the officer,” Broussard said. “He struck her twice. He continued to shoot at her and then pointed the weapon at the officer on scene.”

Broussard said the officer shot Sanders just seconds later. Broussard added the incident was captured on a body-worn camera.

“Although the investigation is ongoing, our preliminary analysis indicates that the Huntsville police officer involved saved the life of the victim, her child and his own,” Broussard said. “He confronted a gunman who was stalking and shooting an innocent woman in her own home.”

Broussard said no action was expected to be taken against the officer involved in the shooting.

The identity of the officer has not been established.
