POMPANO BEACH — The Broward Sheriff's Office remembers Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson one year after his death in a Helicopter crash while responding to an emergency call.

Jackson50, died while doing his favorite job: working as a paramedic.

The BSO fire department rescue helicopter crashed into a residential building, killing not only Jackson but also resident Lurean Wheaton.

“The shock and amazement of witnessing a helicopter, a public safety helicopter, fall from the sky in a devastating manner, claiming two lives, reverberated across the country. And as I said, even internationally,” said Sheriff Gregory Tony.

Jackson leaves behind a son and a daughter. His extended family, including his sister, is still grieving.

“I miss my brother. He was amazing. It's great that we can be here today to celebrate him. He is truly an amazing human being and I'm really glad they had the chance to get something for the rest of the team that is staying behind so they can be safe as they care for, protect and serve the people of this community,” said Terryson Jackson's sister, Dr. Sanjie Jackson.

A brand new state-of-the-art rescue helicopter has been ordered, but the sheriff says Broward County commissioners have not set aside the money for it.

“As sheriff of this county, I will not sit idly by and wait for yet another helicopter to fall out of the sky so our county officials can take action. I have presented a solid procurement plan for these helicopters and they are on their way. And yet we still do not have enough money for this important piece of equipment,” Tony said.

The sheriff said he has the support of the unions, but the county is not giving him the money. They say Tony can appeal to the state.
