County receives update on new Georgetown prison

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — After breaking ground this summer, developers expect construction on the new Georgetown County Jail to begin in about a month.

The company hired by Georgetown County provided an update to county council members on Tuesday and said work on awarding certain projects for the prison had been completed.

The approximately 7,800 m² facility will have 256 beds, with a core capacity of 500 beds.

Total construction costs are estimated at $59.5 million, plus an additional $7 million for architectural planning and county services.

Construction work is expected to take place in 2025 and 2026, with the opening planned for early 2027.

The jail includes a morgue and a sheriff's office rehabilitation facility.
