Swerve Strickland remembers his famous LU match with AR Fox

– Ahead of AEW All In: London 2024 this past Sunday, former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland spoke with TJ Jefferson of the Rich Eisen Show. Swerve Strickland recalls a famous match he had with AR Fox that took place in Lucha Underground in 2016. Here are some highlights (via Fightful):

Swerve Strickland on the pre-game thought process: “At first we thought, 'Do we have enough? I don't know if we have enough. I think we have enough.' We got to the point where we thought, 'Okay, this is Ultima Lucha. There have been some crazy matches, the bar is already high enough. What do we do to not only raise it, what do we do to put our name on it where people can't copy that because it's us.”

On why no one can copy the energy of the match: “That feeling and that energy you just can't replicate. We just come up with concepts like: this only works if Fox is in this position, this only works if Killshot is in this position, and I think that's what makes that match so closely associated with us and why fans are attached to it. Even years later, they still talk about it because they think: man, those guys, it had to be them. There's no other way, it almost feels like Frieza fighting Goku on Planet Nanik. There's no other fight that could blow up that planet because it had to be them. It had to be those two, and that was the mindset behind it. When you see those moments in a match and you take the characters out and you just have a silhouette, you know that was Kill Shot, you know that was Fox.”

Swerve Strickland lost his AEW World Championship to Bryan Danielson at AEW All In: London last Sunday at Wembley Stadium. In addition, Strickland signed a new contract with AEW, which was announced during the AEW All In Zero Hour pre-show.
