Four years after the death of her former co-star Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o looks back on her grief.

The 41-year-old “Us” actress shared a black-and-white photo of the late “Black Panther” star on Instagram on Wednesday to mark the fourth anniversary of his death. In the caption, Nyong'o, who plays Nakia in the “Black Panther” films, added a quote about grief attributed to an unknown source.

“Grief never ends,” the caption read. “But it changes. It is a transition, not a permanent place. Grief is not a sign of weakness or lack of faith. It is the price of love.”

She added, “In memory of Chadwick Boseman. Forever.” The post also included a photo of Nyong'o and Boseman smiling side by side.

Boseman, who starred as a superhero in “Black Panther,” died on August 28, 2020 at the age of 43 after battling colon cancer for years. His cancer diagnosis was not publicly known before his death.

The actor's death caused great sadness among his fans and co-stars. Nyong'o said at the time that she “found it difficult to think and talk about my friend Chadwick Boseman in the past tense.”

“This makes no sense,” the actress wrote in 2020. “The news of his death is a punch in the gut every morning. I realize we are all mortal, but in life you meet some people who have an immortal energy, who seem like they have existed before, who are exactly where they are always meant to be – here! … who seem timeless. Chadwick was one of those people.”

Chadwick Boseman's Death gives me the courage to carry on. That is what it meant to me

Earlier this year, Nyong'o played a woman dying of cancer in “A Quiet Place: Day One” and told USA TODAY the film helped her cope with the loss of Boseman.

“I was going through a period of reflection on mortality and this film brought me even closer to finding answers to the questions I was asking myself after losing that friend,” she said. “It was scary to have to live in that uncertain place while filming; I was afraid to go there. But when I was there, there was something about knowing that you will definitely leave this earth that makes life much more worth living.”

In a post marking the third anniversary of Boseman's death in 2023, Nyong'o said the news of his loss was a “unique pain” and the “confusion was so deep that it took months for me to trust the feeling of joy again.”
