Former Okaloosa lawmaker denied bail; now incarcerated in Escambia County jail

FORT WALTON BEACH – The former Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputy charged in the death of Senior Airman Roger Fortson was booked into the Escambia County Jail Tuesday.

Eddie Duran, 38, is charged with manslaughter. The charges were dropped after the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office found Duran's actions were “not objectively reasonable” and fired him on May 31 after the agency completed its internal investigation.

Duran responded to an apparent 911 call about a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex on Racetrack Road. During the incident, Fortson was on a FaceTime call with his girlfriend. Body camera footage shows Duran knocking on Fortson's door multiple times. Fortson opened the door with a handgun in his right hand pointed at the ground. Duran then opened fire, fatally shooting Fortson.

Duran was booked into the Okaloosa County Jail on Monday and appeared before a judge on Tuesday, where he was denied bail. During the hearing, his attorney, Rodney Smith, argued that the transfer to the Escambia County Jail was based on concerns that Smith had not addressed.

News of Duran's transfer was first reported by Channel 3 News in Pensacola.

Duran is scheduled to appear in court in Okaloosa County at 12:30 p.m. Thursday for a detention hearing.
