The famous New York-style deli could return to this Texas city

Well, it's just pure speculation at this point, but it looks like a famous deli could be returning to Austin, Texas.

KXAN reports that “Barry and Lisa Katz, owners of the Katz's restaurant company, purchased the property at 618 W. 6.th St. will be acquired at auction, a company spokesman said.'

They are expected to close on the property in August 2024 and plan to operate the restaurant on the ground floor and lease the second and third floors.

While there are currently four Katz's restaurants in the Houston, Texas area, Austin Katz's Deli and Bar, which served New York-style deli classics and Jewish kosher dishes, closed its doors in 2010 after operating at the West Sixth Street location for more than 30 years.

They originally brought their New York-style deli to Austin in 1979. Over time, the restaurant became so popular that it was open 24 hours a day. This, of course, led to the restaurant's trademark: “Katz Never Kloses.”

According to the Austin Business Journal, the restaurant filed for bankruptcy due to unpaid taxes totaling nearly $28,000. The company also filed for bankruptcy in 2004.

It's encouraging to hear that they may be making a comeback. I've been craving these New York-style delicacies since a trip to New York, and I'm glad to hear there's another chance to enjoy these foods closer to home.

According to the company's website, the foods for which Katz's is best known include “the massive Reuben, the tart and crispy fried pickles and the rich, creamy Cheesecake Shake.”

In the meantime, you can visit all of Katz's locations in the Houston, Texas area, including Montrose, The Woodlands, Galleria and The Heights.

Currently, the title of tallest building in Austin goes to The Independent and the tallest in the state is the JPMorgan Chase Tower in downtown Houston.

This new structure will surpass the others by 300 and 20 feet respectively – and give the capital of the Lone Star State the title of “Tallest Building in Texas”.
