Elayn Hunt Correctional Center employee arrested for abuse of office

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – An employee at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center was arrested after a drug-sniffing dog spotted his vehicle.

Kevin Shorty is charged with abuse of office, prohibited acts (Schedule IV) and prohibited carriage of contraband into/out of penal establishments.

Shorty has been employed as an electronics technician at the correctional facility since July 2023, a correctional facility spokesman said.

According to officials, a drug-sniffing dog was alerted to Shorty's vehicle on Tuesday, August 27. While searching the vehicle, officials say they found an unlabeled bottle containing 30 pills, which were later identified as zolpidem tartrate, a Schedule IV controlled substance.

During questioning about the narcotics, officers stated that Shorty had resigned from his position.

Shortly thereafter, Shorty was arrested by the Iberville Sheriff's Office.
