Sumter police arrest wanted teenager in fatal drive-by shooting in May

SUMTER, SC (WIS) – A third person has been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred in Sumter in May, the local police department announced Tuesday.

Police arrested the 16-year-old on Monday after officers spotted him. A Sumter police news release said there was a brief chase before they were able to catch the wanted teen.

The 16-year-old was charged with murder and attempted murder, the police press release said.

Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, 32, was killed on May 27. Investigators said his car was stopped at a traffic light on Green Swamp Road around 7:30 a.m. when a white sedan pulled up next to him, shot at him and sped away.

A passenger in McFadden's vehicle was also injured and has since recovered from his injuries, police said.

The 16-year-old is currently being charged as a minor, the press release said.

“However, Sumter Police have requested that he be charged as an adult. That determination would be made by family court,” Sumter Police officials said in a news release.

Sumter police said 19-year-old Curtis Jefferson of Mayesville and 20-year-old Fernando Quintez Adams of Sumter are in custody in connection with the drive-by shooting.

Both remain in the Sumter-Lee County Detention Center.
