OAKLAND COUNTY — A Rochester Hills doctor who worked at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township is being held on $2 million bail on multiple felony charges for allegedly taking nude photographs of unsuspecting children and women over the past six years.

The 40-year-old internist Dr. Oumair Aejaz is accused of using hidden cameras to film children as young as two and women of various ages in hospital rooms, changing rooms, toilets, bathrooms and bedrooms to which he had access, as well as in a local swimming club.

Aejaz had privileges at Ascension Genesys Hospital and Henry Ford Macomb in Clinton Township, but was not on staff.

Investigators believe that Aejaz recorded sexual encounters with numerous women as well as with sleeping or unconscious hospital patients and that he also filmed relatives in the bathroom or while they were changing.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, assisted by Oakland County District Attorney Karen D. McDonald, announced the charges during a press conference last week.

“This is one of the most disturbing cases of sexual assault I have seen in my long career,” Bouchard said. “He rapes literally anyone he can. From a two-year-old boy to adult women, no one is immune to his disgusting, predatory behavior. Raping children in safe spaces while they are changing for a fun bath or sexually assaulting women who are still under anesthesia after a medical procedure shows that his depravity knows no bounds. At the end of this case, I sincerely hope he is held accountable behind bars.”

McDonald said her office will use all available resources to pursue the charges.

“These are children and mothers in a swim school,” McDonald said. “They are there to teach their children to swim because they enjoy it and because they want their children to be safe in the water. They were abused by a trusted person in the community – a doctor. This is more than an invasion of privacy. It robs these mothers and children and all of us of the sense of safety we should have when we are in a place like this with our children.”

Sheriff's detectives received a tip about Aejaz on Aug. 7 and quickly began putting together a case against him, the sheriff said. He was arrested at his home the following day when detectives executed a search warrant.

Bouchard said investigators seized six computers, four cellphones and 15 external storage devices from Aejaz's home. One device contained more than 13,000 videos allegedly recorded by Aejaz over the past six years. Investigators estimated that forensic examination of all the seized materials would take six months.

On August 13, Aejaz was arraigned in 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills. He is charged with 10 counts:

• A case of child sexual abuse.

• One count of using a computer to create and/or reproduce child sexually abusive material.

• Two counts of photographing/recording children under 18 years of age in the nude.

• Two cases of nude photography/recording of two women over 18 years of age.

• Four counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Aejaz is an Indian citizen working in the United States on a visa. He came to this country in 2011, completed his residency at Detroit Sinai Grace Hospital, and then moved to Dawson, Alabama. In 2018, Aejaz returned to Oakland County to continue his practice as an internist.

Bouchard said he expects the geographic scope of the investigation to expand beyond Genesee and Macomb counties, where the hospitals are located, and may include other states or countries depending on where Aejaz worked. The sheriff urged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Aejaz to contact sheriff's detectives at [email protected]. — LR
