A Riverside County sheriff's deputy and two other people were injured in a two-car crash in Mead Valley on Tuesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Brown Street and Oakwood Street.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the deputy's Ford Explorer SUV traveling north on Brown Street when the driver of a Toyota Camry traveling east on Oakwood Street approached him, CHP officials said.

The cars collided at the intersection, with the Camry hitting the SUV on the passenger side, CHP said.

“The cause of the accident is currently still being investigated,” police said.

Investigators say there are stop signs on Oakwood Street, but Brown Street is a through street.

The deputy suffered minor injuries in the crash, while the two occupants of the other car suffered moderate to serious injuries, CHP investigators said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

“We do not believe alcohol played a role in this collision,” officials said.

California Highway Patrol investigators take over the investigation when an officer is involved in an accident due to a long-standing practice between the two departments.
