ASU Football releases roster before season starts

The Arizona State football team has released its roster ahead of the season opener, and based on the results of practice before Week 1, there are no surprises.

ASU Football has a competitive roster. The roster shows this by having multiple “ORs” at the various positions listed.

There are multiple players in consideration for seven of the eleven starting positions on defense. Of particular note are the defensive back and defensive tackle positions, with five players – Xavion Alford, Shamari Simmons, Cole Martin, Myles Rowser and Kamari Wilson – being considered for three starting spots.

The defensive back position is probably the most heavily staffed position on the roster, and defensive coordinator Brian Ward will likely rotate players generously.

Perhaps the most notable of these “ORs” can be found throughout the special teams department.

Multiple players are being considered for each individual position before Saturday's game against Wyoming. Three different kickers — redshirt sophomore Ian Hershey, redshirt freshman Carston Kieffer and graduate transfer Parker Lewis — are being considered for the kicking duties before Saturday.

The Sun Devils open the season Saturday at 7:30 p.m. MST against Wyoming on FS1.
