A man who caused a fatal overdose on a human on May 12, 2023, will spend about a year in Hennepin County Jail, according to court documents.

Delwayne Wesley Center, 41, was sentenced to 364 days in the Hennepin County Jail and received a prison sentence of approximately seven years (86 months) to serve if he violates the terms of his five-year probation.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS previously reported that Minneapolis police responded to a report of a man presumed deceased on May 12, 2023 at an apartment on 15th Street West.

Center told police he met the man on a dating app and they engaged in sexual activities, including bondage. While the man was tied up, Center injected him with methamphetamine, the same amount he himself consumes, court documents say.

When the man began to overdose, Center tied him up and sent him to bed.

When he woke up the next morning, the man appeared to be dead. Center told police he watched television for a while and then started cleaning the apartment and throwing away the drugs and drug containers.

He then went out to buy cigarettes and when he returned he found that the apartment was starting to smell. He told police he panicked because he was afraid he would get in trouble for buying drugs.

An autopsy revealed that the victim had died of acute methamphetamine poisoning; his death was ruled a homicide.
