Manchester United are battling a number of injury problems ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday, and Erik ten Hag's selection problems could become even more acute ahead of the game at Old Trafford due to the arrivals and departures on the final day of the transfer window.

United have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer, with four players already signed and Manuel Ugarte from Paris-Saint Germain close to moving to Old Trafford. Around £138 million has been spent so far and a number of high-profile players have been offloaded. Scott McTominay is close to moving to Napoli and Jadon Sancho is also close to leaving.

That means United will be without a number of players for the game against Liverpool, with Ten Hag confirming that Mason Mount will not be available. Other notable absentees include Rasmus Hojlund, who is yet to play for United this season, and new summer signing Leny Yoro, who moved to Old Trafford for £52 million.

Luke Shaw is unavailable after a brief appearance for England during the European Championship, Victor Lindelof is injured and Tyrell Malacia is recovering slowly after missing an entire season.

Ten Hag said: “As you saw, Mason Mount is not available for the press. I think that's it. It will be the same team as last week.”

Of McTominay, Ten Hag said: “He was so important to our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately those are the rules. You have to discuss the rules to sell players and of course homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.”

Meanwhile, Sancho may have finally found a way to get rid of Carrington, with Chelsea likely to complete a deal for the winger, to the detriment of the Dutchman's team.

The United boss said: “He is a player in our squad and we are happy with him. We need a good squad, we need depth. We have a lot of games to play between now and January. After the break we play every third day so we need options.”

Ugarte is also expected to miss the game. His contract has yet to be announced and the Uruguayan is unlikely to be cleared for international duty before the game.

Ten Hag was asked about Ugarte in his press conference: “It looks like you know everything, so I can't tell you more than you already know. It's not finalized yet. Do you expect it? Yes, we expect it, but I can't confirm it.”
