A chronology of the Oak Cliff shooting that left a Dallas police officer dead

A Dallas police officer was killed in a shooting in southeast Oak Cliff on Thursday night.

On Friday morning, his mother confirmed The Dallas Morning News that her son Darron Burks, 46, was the police officer shot outside the For Oak Cliff Community Center.

Two other officers were injured in the shooting and are hospitalized. One of them was in critical condition and the other was listed in stable condition Friday morning, Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman said.

This is how events unfolded late Thursday and early Friday:

Thursday, August 29

10:10 p.m.: According to an online police 911 log, dozens of units responded to a 911 call in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive, near South Marsalis Avenue. (The news Ultimately, more than 95 units responded to the shooting.)

Officers who responded to the incident found an officer shot in his marked patrol car, Lowman confirmed at a news conference early Friday. They exchanged fire with a gunman, and two other officers were shot.

10:35 p.m.: According to Lewisville Police spokeswoman Rachel Roberts, the pursuit of a suspect has now reached Lewisville.

10:38 p.m.: The pursuit ends in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35E north of State Highway 121 Business.

The suspect got out of a vehicle with a long gun, Lowman said, and was then shot by Dallas police officers.

Friday, August 30

00:20: In a post on Facebook, Lewisville Police confirmed that none of their officers were involved in the chase.

00:28: In a post on X, the DPD announces that it is investigating a shooting involving an officer.

1:15 am: Dozens of Dallas police officers stand quietly outside the emergency room entrance at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Patrol cars line the block leading to the hospital, their blue lights flashing.

3:15 am: The DPD holds a press conference outside Methodist Hospital and confirms the shooting, the chase and the officer's death.

“Our department is suffering,” Lowman said. “We ask for the thoughts and prayers of our city tonight and this morning, not only for those recovering in the hospital, but for our deceased, their families and loved ones, and also for us as a department.”

4:00 am: A funeral procession begins to carry the fallen police officer from Methodist Hospital to the Dallas County Coroner's Office.

05:07 am: Dallas Police Chief Eddie García released a Tribute to X with the caption “No words.” He attaches a photo of a Dallas police badge over the city of Dallas with a dark blue line down the middle.

7:30 am: In an update to his Facebook post at 12:20 a.m., Lewisville police said “the road is clear” and “traffic is clear.”

9:13 am: U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who represents the district where the shooting occurred, wrote on X that she was “heartbroken for the family and friends of the police officer who died last night.”

“This epidemic of gun violence must end,” she also wrote.

Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth lawmakers respond to Dallas police shooting

9:23 am: Governor Greg Abbott travels to X to pay his last respects to the fallen officer.

“Our thoughts are with @DallasPD and the entire Dallas community,” he wrote.

10:10 am: In a statement posted on X, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is calling for the city's flags to fly at half-staff.

“Dallas has lost a hero,” he wrote.

11:12 am: Burk's mother confirms The news that her son was the police officer killed in the shooting on Thursday.
