Man drives SUV onto golf course in Delaware and hits passenger in golf cart

A man who police say drove his SUV onto the Deerfield Golf Club course while drunk, struck a golf cart and ejected its passenger from the course, has been charged with a felony and several misdemeanors.

The incident, captured on video that made the rounds on social media, occurred in Newark, Delaware, just before 2:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Police from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control arrested the man immediately after the incident. He will be charged once he is released from the hospital, the agency said.

Video taken by a passerby in another area of the golf course shows the man, whose identity police have not identified, speeding his Ford Bronco along a paved road that separates two areas of the Milford Crossings golf course, then driving over the low curb and onto the green.

On the green, he narrowly misses a golf cart. A player can be seen running away from the SUV.

The Bronco then crashes into a second golf cart, causing the passenger to fall out of the vehicle and onto the ground. They remain there as the Bronco continues to circle over a small hill and back to the paved road. Then the video ends.

DNREC police said the victim, whose gender and age were not specified, “suffered minor injuries” but refused medical treatment at the scene.

When police arrested the Bronco driver, “he made statements that necessitated his transport to a hospital for evaluation,” DNREC said.

“Oh, he’s trying to kill me”

A video of the incident, which quickly made the rounds in several Reddit threads and other social media and was shared via text message, attracted widespread attention on Thursday and Friday.

On the golf subreddit, the post had nearly 25,000 upvotes as of 11 a.m. ET Friday. The post's title was “Attempted murder on golf course.”

“I expected someone to steal a car, not an actual murder attempt,” wrote one commenter.

Another commenter said he was the man who ran away “right before the driver crashed into the golf cart my buddy was in.”

He said he and his friends had just finished the 16th hole. The driver of the Bronco, he said, was “doing donuts all over the driving range” and he pulled out his phone to snap a photo of the license plate.

“The driver saw me filming him and turned around to try to run me over,” the user wrote. “In about 0.5 seconds it went from 'I'm taking a picture of some idiot' to 'oh he's trying to kill me.'”

Delaware Online/The News Journal was unable to verify the accuracy of the user comment.

The driver of the Bronco was charged with reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of drugs, hit-and-run after an accident with injuries, “malicious damage to property by a motor vehicle,” and no insurance, as well as several traffic violations.

The golf club is located in White Clay Creek State Park, which is why DNREC police responded.
