The heartbroken sister of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau calls off her wedding after her two brothers die in a tragic drunk driving accident

Following the death of her brothers, NHL star Johnny Gaudreau (31) and Matthew (29), Katie Gaudreau has cancelled her wedding planned for Friday afternoon.

The Gaudreau brothers were believed to have been riding their bicycles on the eve of their sister Katie's wedding when the fatal accident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. in Oldmans Township, Salem County, New Jersey.

The two were struck and killed by another vehicle. The vehicle was driven by 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins of Woodstown, New Jersey. He is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Higgins was charged with two counts of negligent homicide and is not eligible for bail. Page Six was the first to report on the cancellation of the wedding.

In documents obtained by DailyMail.com, Higgins admitted to police that he had drunk “5-6 beers” before getting behind the wheel of his Jeep Grand Cherokee and crashing into the back of Johnny and Matthew on Thursday night.

The wedding ceremony between Katie and her fiancé Kevin Joyce was scheduled to take place at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Parish in Gloucester City starting at 1:45 p.m., according to the couple's page on The Knot.

A cocktail reception and a six-hour reception were planned for Friday evening at The Lucy by Cescaphe in Philadelphia.

It is currently not known when the wedding will be postponed.

Officers also claimed that Higgins showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking “before and during the drive.”

While under the influence of alcohol, Higgins is said to have told them that “his consumption of alcoholic beverages contributed to his impatience and reckless driving.”

The Gaudreau brothers were to be the witnesses at Katie's wedding.

Johnny leaves behind his wife Meredith, whom he married in September 2021, and two young children: one-year-old daughter Noa and baby boy Johnny, who was born just six months ago.

It is believed that Meredith was supposed to be the maid of honor at her sister-in-law's wedding this weekend.
