The Kolkata incident was very tragic and shameful, says Rajnath Singh – News TodayDefence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday took a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on women's safety, saying many states were not making serious efforts to combat crime against women.

Singh said at an event in Thiruvananthapuram that despite all the changes, there appears to be still a lot of work to be done given the atrocities and crimes against women in the country.

He added that the Modi government has taken a strict stance against crimes against women, but many states are not making serious efforts in this direction. The recent heartbreaking incident in Kolkata is very tragic and shameful.

“We have amended the law to provide death penalty for heinous crimes like rape. This law must be implemented with utmost rigour,” he said. Modi's government will always be recognised as the greatest change maker government.

But the situation is now changing rapidly. For example, one can observe that the proportion of women in the country's armed forces is increasing, said Singh.

The doctor-educator was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing the case, has conducted a second round of lie detector tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

CBI officials have also conducted the lie detector test on the arrested accused Sanjay Roy in connection with the crime. The CBI took over the investigation into the rape and murder of the junior doctor of the government hospital on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.
