Union Minister Athawale demands death penalty in rape and murder case of doctor

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has demanded death penalty for those involved in the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, stressed the need for stringent laws to combat such crimes and demanded that the trials be conducted in fast-track courts, stating that the accused should be convicted within six months to a year.

Following the incident, the Calcutta High Court handed over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Allegations were also made against the former vice-chancellor of the medical college, who was questioned by the central agency. The tragic case led to widespread protests across the country, with various social groups demanding justice.
