Five drivers summoned before qualifying after dramatic incidents on the Monza track

Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo go to the race stewards after the final practice session before the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

An incident during the third practice session at Monza has caught the attention of race control; Leclerc, Piastri and Ricciardo have been asked to explain their part in the matter.

Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc stumble over each other

During the third practice session, Piastri encountered Leclerc when the McLaren driver was on a push lap and obviously felt he had been slowed down by the Ferrari.

As Leclerc pulled over to let Piastri pass coming out of the first chicane, he raised his hand in apology as Piastri came towards him and harassed the Ferrari. Leclerc said over the team radio: “I thought he was further away, my mistake.”

Moments later, Piastri slowed down as he exited the second Lesmo to let Leclerc pass.

However, Piastri moved to the right-hand side of the track just as the Monegasque tried to overtake him on the right-hand side. The gap to Leclerc quickly narrowed as a result. By the time the duo realised what was happening, their wheels had finally come to a stop on the grass.

Leclerc reported over the radio: “I almost collided with Oscar.”

Just behind the duo was VCARB's Daniel Ricciardo, who also had to slam on the brakes to get behind the blockade of Piastri and Leclerc. The other Australian shouted “Oh my goodness!” before being informed of Piastri's previous incident with Leclerc.

“Yes, it was chaos,” replied Ricciardo.

The race management urgently wants to clarify the incident and has summoned all three drivers to describe what happened from their point of view. The summons was issued before qualifying.

Possible penalties include a relegation to the starting grid, which would be particularly damaging for Leclerc as the Monegasque wants to bring glory and honor to Ferrari at his home race.

Separately, Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez were cited for failing to follow the race director's instructions to use the escape road at Turn 4, as they each drove off into the escape zone individually towards the end of the session.

Williams rookie Franco Colapinto was also summoned for violating the rules at the start of practice at the very end of the session.
