A comprehensive mental health programme will be introduced in all Delhi prisons, along with numerous reforms such as provision of electric vehicles for visitors in Tihar Jail and much-needed renovation and repair of toilets.

“We believe that every person has the potential to change and it is our responsibility to provide them with the tools they need to do so,” Gahlot said.

The statement said that during his visit, the minister reviewed several important initiatives and reforms currently being implemented in Delhi's prisons and directed steps for further improvements.

Gahlot visited Central Jail No. 6 and inspected the vocational training being provided by the 'Chal Charkha Unit' (Stitching and Jewellery Unit). He praised the NGOs for the valuable vocational training being provided to the inmates, the statement said.

To improve healthcare on prison grounds, the minister proposed introducing more comprehensive health programs that focus on both physical and mental health, according to the statement.

“I visited Tihar Jail, the largest prison complex in Asia, as part of the ongoing efforts of the Delhi government to improve prison conditions. During my visit, I inspected the basic facilities provided to the prisoners and issued some remedial measures,” Gahlot said.

“A comprehensive mental health programme will be introduced in all Delhi prisons to improve the health conditions of the inmates and promote their overall well-being and rehabilitation,” he said.

In line with the broader agenda of promoting eco-friendly modes of transport and reducing carbon footprint across all sectors, the minister proposed setting up a facility for visitors using electric vehicles in Tihar Jail, it said.

Almost 4,000 visitors come to the Delhi prison complex every day to meet the inmates, it says.

According to the statement, Gahlot instructed authorities to ensure a clean, safe and decent living environment, including improved sanitation, adequate ventilation and access to basic amenities for all inmates.

The minister was accompanied by Delhi Home Minister Chanchal Yadav, Director General of Prisons Satish Golcha, Deputy Inspector General Ajay Kumar Bisht, Deputy Inspector General Rajeev Singh and other senior officials of the Prisons Department, the statement added.
