'It was terribly awkward': Women In Blue stars talk about having to wear miniskirts for Apple TV+ crime drama

Women in Blue Hit Apple TV+ in summer 2024 and tells the story of four characters who challenged the status quo in 1970 and became the first women to join the Mexican police force. Unfortunately, their allies on the job are few and far between, even when they catch a serial killer. The characters' police uniforms are straight out of the early '70s: bright blue miniskirts with high-heeled boots, and they carry a whistle instead of whatever weapon the male cops would have been given. It's not comfortable for the characters, and from what the stars told CinemaBlend, it wasn't very comfortable for them as actors, either.

Titled The Blues This ten-part series in Spanish is inspired by true events and features an all-Hispanic cast. So far, only six of those ten episodes have been released to Apple TV+ subscribers, so now is a good time to catch up if you haven't tuned in yet. When I spoke to stars Ximena Sariñara (Angeles), Bárbara Mori (Maria), Natalie Téllez (Valentina) and Amorita Rasgado (Gabina), I asked them what it was like for them to wear 1970s miniskirts to play their roles. Téllez explained:

It wasn't practical! You know exactly what the characters are like when you see how they react when they try on the uniform, and you see how big their machismo is. But they knew that for them, basically, it was an opportunity to have a job and to have a place in society beyond their homes and families. I found it terribly uncomfortable, as you said, a miniskirt and high-heeled boots with a thick belt. It was literally a shaping belt and a whistle! It was terribly uncomfortable, so I can't imagine these women with police training walking around the city in those skirts and high-heeled boots. Horrible.
