In the mid-1980s, the LAPD became aware of a serial killer who appeared to be targeting defenseless black women. The killer, known as the “Southside Slayer,” is said to have stabbed and strangled at least 13 prostitutes between 1983 and 1985. In May 2007, DNA analysis linked the murder of 25-year-old Janecia Peters to at least 11 unsolved murders in Los Angeles, the first of which had occurred decades earlier. That same year, the LAPD formed a task force. In July 2010, Lonnie Franklin was arrested and charged with murder.
