Suryakumar Yadav's hopes of returning to the Indian Test team have been dashed after the right-hander sustained an injury while playing in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in Mumbai against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI in Coimbatore.

The match was not one to remember for Mumbai either, as they were crushed by 286 runs and Tamil Nadu easily advanced to the semi-finals.

The upcoming Duleep Trophy is a big tournament for Suryakumar, who has already expressed his desire to represent India in the red-ball format. Notably, India's T20I captain has played only one Test match in his career, against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in February 2023.

Suryakumar had made his intentions quite clear before the start of the Buchi Babu tournament that he wanted to return to the Test team based on some impressive performances.

“What I have in hand now is to play the Buchi Babu tournament, then win the Duleep Trophy and then see what happens,” he told reporters ahead of the match in Coimbatore. “But yes, I'm really looking forward to it. There are ten Test matches coming up and I'm obviously looking forward to having some fun with the red ball.”

Suryakumar has played 82 first-class matches in his career so far and has scored 5628 runs at an average of 43.62. The Mumbai batsman has hit 14 centuries and 29 fifties in his first-class career.

If Suryakumar does not recover in time, this will weaken the strength of Team C, as it is already without the services of fast-starter Umran Malik due to illness.

Team C for the Duleep Trophy:

Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Abishek Porel (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, B Indrajith, Hrithik Shokeen, Manav Suthar, Umran Malik, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Anshul Khamboj, Himanshu Chauhan, Mayank Markande, Aryan Juyal (WK) , Sandeep Warrier.
