Heavy rains cause flooding, damage in Vijayawada; IMD issues 5-day warning

Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh) [India]September 1 (ANI): Heavy rains caused severe flooding in Rama Krishna Puram area of ​​Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, submerging houses and vehicles.

Police and NDRF teams have launched rescue and relief operations and shifted the affected residents to rehabilitation centres.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a weather warning for the next five days.

The IMD forecast heavy rains with thunderstorms and lightning for Sunday.

Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in isolated places in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam during the next four days.

On Saturday, a house in Mogalrajapuram collapsed when a stone fell from a hill. One woman died. Two other women were admitted to hospital and their condition is said to be stable.

According to authorities, the house collapsed after a rock fell from the top of the hill during heavy rains.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting on Saturday and directed officials to remain alert and vigilant in the rain-affected areas.

He also ordered the declaration of school holidays in regions with heavy rainfall, the installation of warning signs near overflowing streams and rivers, and the issuing of alerts to mobile phones.

Naidu warned of potential dangers, including falling power lines and trees due to strong winds and rain.

Parts of Vijayawada and Warangal in Telangana were hit by rain on Saturday, leading to flooding in several areas. (ANI)
