Barber’s obscene gesture towards teenage girl sparks tension in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli – ThePrint –

Gopeshwar (U'khand), Sep 1 (PTI) – A man's alleged obscene gesture towards a local teenage girl sparked tension in Nandanagar tehsil of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, with hundreds of people taking to the streets on Sunday demanding the arrest of the accused.

Angry villagers marched through the streets and even tried to vandalise the hair salon of the accused – a 24-year-old man from another community.

The defendant is on the run and his business is closed.

Local traders' association chairman Nandan Singh said people took to the streets to demand action against the accused and his supporters.

“Protests are taking place. People are shocked by this incident. Everyone has taken to the streets,” Singh said.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, Police Commissioner (Chamoli) Sarvesh Panwar rushed to the scene of the accident with a team to calm the protesters.

Locals said the alleged incident occurred on August 22 and the girl's father filed a complaint with local police.

The accused allegedly made obscene gestures towards the girl, who lived in the same neighbourhood. She complained about the matter to her mother, who questioned the hairdresser. However, the accused had since closed his shop and fled.

The girl's father was not in Nandanagar at the time. He was informed about the alleged incident on Saturday and lodged a complaint at the Nandanagar police station, locals said.

Calls to the Chamoli police commissioner remained unanswered. PTI COR ALM ALM SZM SZM
