Minor girl sexually assaulted in Howrah Government Hospital; accused arrested

Calcutta (West Bengal) [India]September 1 (ANI): Amid ongoing protests in West Bengal against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, another case of alleged molestation of a minor girl at Howrah Government Hospital has come to light, the HGH chief said on Sunday.

According to HGH Superintendent Narayan Chattopadhyay, an FIR was filed at Howrah police station, which led to the subsequent arrest of the accused.

BJP state secretary Umesh Rai said the incident took place on Saturday evening when the victim, who was already in hospital, was undergoing a CT scan.

The head of the HGH also announced that the safety of the victim and her family members would be ensured.

“A complaint has been filed at Howrah police station and the accused has been arrested. We have sought an explanation from the private partner who conducted the CT scan of the victim. We will forward this to the higher authority and take appropriate action. The arrested person was an employee of the private-public partner,” Chattopadhyay said.

“We are ensuring the safety of the victim and her family members. Repair work was going on in the CT room, but he suddenly started it in the evening. We did not know about it,” he added.

The BJP state secretary also demanded the immediate resignation of the superintendent and the inclusion of his name in the FIR.

“Last night, a minor girl from Howrah, who was already hospitalized, had to undergo a CT scan. When she was taken to the CT scan centre of Howrah Hospital, a boy working there found her alone, behaved rudely with her, showed her obscene videos, harassed her and asked her to remove her clothes. All this happened because there was no one else there. The person who committed this crime is a criminal but imagine the system that was put in place to commit this crime,” he said.

“The issue of safety of patients, doctors and hospitals is being raised across the country. Howrah General Hospital is completely incompetent. We today demand the immediate resignation of the superintendent and that his name also be included in the FIR,” the BJP leader added.

The BJP workers also protested against the alleged rape attempt on a minor girl at Howrah Government Hospital. (ANI)
