South Carolina basketball star Ashlyn Watkins arrested and charged

South Carolina national championship-winning forward Ashlyn Watkins was arrested Saturday on assault and kidnapping charges.

Online court records for Richland County show Watkins was granted bail on $30,000 and ordered not to have any direct or indirect contact with the victim, who was not named in the records and did not list an attorney for Watkins.

Watkins was ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from the victim's home, workplace, school and church. She was allowed to leave the state for basketball games and practices.

Her court date is scheduled for October 25.

An arrest warrant from the University of South Carolina Police Department obtained by WLTX-TV states that Watkins attacked the victim by “forcibly grabbing her face, pulling her arms and pushing her.”

The warrant states that Watkins picked up and carried the victim against her will. It says Watkins “grabbed the victim by the head and forced her to walk down the hallway, thereby controlling her movement and preventing her from leaving.”

According to the arrest warrant, the victim was eventually able to free himself and set off a fire alarm, prompting police and firefighters to arrive on the scene. According to the arrest warrant, the victim was treated for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

A spokeswoman for the women's basketball team said in a text message to The Associated Press that the school is aware of Watkins' arrest and continues to gather information. Watkins did not immediately respond to a social media message seeking comment.

Watkins is a rising 6-foot-3 junior who averaged 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds last season for the Gamecocks, who went 38-0 and became the first undefeated national champions since 2016. Watkins also led the team with 91 blocks.

She became the first player in program history to record a dunk in a game during her freshman season, and added a second dunk last season.
