Lando Norris answers the question about the McLaren F1 team's mission: "I want to race"

Lando Norris insists he wants to race “against” his McLaren F1 teammate Oscar Piastri after answering a question about whether he should be the favourite in the hunt for Max Verstappen.

Norris secured pole position for the Italian Grand Prix – and with his title rival Verstappen only finishing seventh, this could be a big day for the McLaren driver in this year's title race.

The topic of team instructions has been a frequent topic of conversation at McLaren, especially in light of the events in Hungary.

Oscar Piastri was awarded the victory at the Hungaroring after Norris decided to give up the lead due to a team order from McLaren.

With Norris now a realistic title contender given McLaren's form against Red Bull, 2016 F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg urged the Woking team to favour their British star.

When asked about the team instructions, Norris told Sky after qualifying: “I want to race. That's why I'm here. We've talked about everything and prepared for everything.”

“If Oscar has a better race and comes forward, it’s probably because he did a better job than me.

“We know what is best for the team. We want a one-two finish as a team and working together is the best way to achieve that.”

Looking ahead to Sunday's race, Norris is still concerned about the threat Verstappen could pose, even though he will start from seventh place on the grid.

Norris assessed Verstappen's chances as follows: “It's definitely a good opportunity. I expect him to come through quickly and get behind us. Their race pace looked very strong on Friday, they were on the better side in terms of grain and wear. I expect them to be a bit more hopeful tomorrow.”

“For some reason they didn't seem to make that progress in qualifying. He still seemed to be fast, even in Q2 he was right up there with the front and was faster than me at the end even on used tires.”

“Even his gap to Perez was not as big as usual, so I don't know if he was struggling more with something or didn't do enough good laps. There will certainly be a reason for it and we have to try to make the best of it.”
