BJP demands Mamata’s resignation, TMC accuses saffron party of playing political games – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Kolkata, Sept 1 (PTI) – The BJP on Sunday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she had failed to ensure the safety of women, making West Bengal the most unsafe state in the country.

In an interview with X, BJP IT chief Amit Malviya pointed out the alleged molestation of a nurse in a hospital in Birbhum, a minor girl in a hospital in Howrah and another minor girl in North 24 Parganas within the last 24 hours.

“While West Bengal is in the throes of a vibrant civil society movement demanding justice for the young doctor who was raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, a nurse is sexually harassed in a Swasthya Kendra in Birbhum and now a staff member of a hospital in Howrah is attempting to violate the modesty of a minor girl in the CT room,” Malviya posted on X.

He further asked, “What does Mamata Banerjee, the health minister of Bengal, have to do to make men who attack women with impunity and feel protected start fearing the law?” The BJP leader added, “Make no mistake, these men are running amok because Mamata Banerjee has degraded government hospitals into money-making machines where criminal syndicates trade in everything from medicines to dead bodies, from hospital beds to doctor's appointments. The 'money-grubbing culture' gives these men of the TMC a licence to rape and loot.” Malviya added, “The question is: how much does Mamata Banerjee get? If Mamata Banerjee starts hanging those responsible for rapes as she is demanding, despite the relevant legal provisions, soon there will be no one left in the TMC.” “Thanks to Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal is the most unsafe state for women. It has done nothing to enforce strict rules and set up fast track courts to punish the accused in rape and POCSO cases,” he added.

In Birbhum, a nurse at Illambazar Block Hospital was allegedly harassed and verbally abused by a male patient on Saturday night. In Howrah, a laboratory technician was arrested for allegedly molesting a minor girl at the District Headquarters Hospital, where the 12-year-old was admitted last week.

Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI(M), demonstrated in front of the hospital block on Sunday and demanded the resignation of the chief.

In Madhyamgram's Rajbari area, a mob vandalised the house of a panchayat member accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl. The accused was arrested.

BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “West Bengal is witnessing one incident after another under the Mamata Banerjee government, which has simply failed to ensure the safety of women and minors. She must resign.” TMC leader Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP of exploiting public discontent over the rape-murder of the young doctor at RG Kar Hospital and trying to destabilise the democratically elected government of Mamata Banerjee.

Ghosh said, “Our Prime Minister has announced zero tolerance towards rape and has demanded death penalty for rapists. The RG Kar incident is a cause of dismay for all of us. But by denouncing every reprehensible case of sexual harassment of women and children and blaming the ruling party, the BJP is seeking political gains. What about sexual abuse, assault, harassment and rape of women in BJP-ruled states?” PTI SUS MNB
