Murderer who strangled his son died in Frankland prison

Henry Bangs, from Blackpool, was jailed in 2001 for killing his son Tony with a knotted shoelace after the boy decided to live with his mother.

According to a prison inspectorate report, he died on February 2 this year at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

The circumstances of his death are not yet known. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is currently conducting an investigation. The findings will be published following the investigation.

When handing down the verdict, Judge Peter Openshaw told Bangs that he could expect to face several years in prison for the “absolutely horrific murder”.

He said: “With great violence and brutality you strangled your son, a boy who was only 12 years old.”

“You did this because he chose to live with his mother. You wanted revenge for her taking him away from you, as you saw it.”

HMP Frankland, nicknamed 'Monster Mansion' because of the large number of murderers, rapists and terrorists imprisoned there, is a Category A prison in Brasside, County Durham.
