Tobi scores late as Canvey Island fight back to win FA Cup tie

Mason Spence gave the Irish the lead after just six minutes at Steve Taxi's Stadium with a penalty before Conor Hubble equalised for the Gulls shortly before half-time.

Tinubu then completed the comeback shortly before the end and was delighted when the ball landed in the net.

“It’s always great to get on the scoresheet, but scoring the winning goal in the last minute is an even better feeling,” said Tinubu.

“I'm just happy that we were able to win and qualify for the next round.”

Canvey will find out their next opponents in the draw this afternoon.

And Tinubu was pleased with the way Brad Wellmen's team fought back and secured the win against a strong opponent.

“It was a good game and to be fair to Milton Keynes they fought hard,” said Tinubu.

“The early penalty they got, which I personally think was weak, kind of put us under pressure.

“But I think we got it under control and equalised before half-time, which I thought was important.

“From then on, all we had to do was stay calm and trust that we would win.

“Luckily, I was able to add another goal in the last minute.”

Canvey have now won two games in a row after a difficult start to the season.

And Tinubu is keen to continue this successful path.

“We know it was a difficult start,” Tinubu said.

“We were unlucky in some games and I think we played well in some but just weren't able to finish the games.

“But we have now won two games in two, which gives confidence in the dressing room. We just need to take that into the league on Saturday and I am sure we can go home with a positive result.”

Canvey host Dulwich Hamlet this weekend and Tinubu is confident that a new-look side can continue to perform well.

“We lost some big players this year, but we replaced them well,” Tinubu said.

“We have a good squad and it’s just about having the belief and confidence to show that on the pitch.

“In terms of our possibilities and hopes, there are honestly no limits. We know what we are capable of, so we'll just see how the season goes.”

Elsewhere, Basildon United lost 1-0 to Biggleswade in the FA Cup on Saturday.
