Man arrested for making obscene gesture towards girl – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Gopeshwar (U'khand), Sept 2 (PTI) – A 24-year-old man accused of making an obscene gesture towards a teenage girl in Nandanagar tehsil of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand has been arrested, police said on Monday.

The accused, a barber, was arrested on Sunday evening from Bijnor in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pramod Shah told PTI.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “Respect for women is our top priority. We condemn any unpleasant incident that happens to a woman or daughter. The law will punish the perpetrator as a matter of priority. Such incidents cannot be tolerated in Devbhoomi.” The incident had caused tension in Nandanagar on Sunday, with hundreds of people taking to the streets to demand the arrest of the accused.

Angry villagers also tried to vandalize the defendant's shop.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, which involves two different communities, the Chamoli police commissioner and other officials have continued to be stationed in Nandanagar. The situation is under control, said DSP Shah. PTI COR ALM DIV DIV
