Kenya extradites murder suspect to the US

Kevin Kang'ethe was the subject of an international manhunt for three months after he fled the United States to his native Kenya following the murder of Margaret Mbitu, who was found stabbed to death in a parking lot at Boston's Logan Airport in November.

He was arrested in Kenya in January, but after just a week in custody, Kang'ethe escaped from a cell – much to the embarrassment of the Kenyan police.

He was caught again in February while hiding in a relative's house on the outskirts of Nairobi.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said in a statement that Kang'ethe left Kenya on Sunday and faces murder charges in a Boston court on Tuesday.

Attorney General Renson Ingonga assured FBI Director Christopher Wray during talks in Nairobi in June that his office was “committed to ensuring that justice is served swiftly in this case,” the statement said.

Four police officers, two relatives and a lawyer were arrested in connection with Kang'ethe's prison escape.

Just last month, another humiliating incident for Kenyan police occurred when a suspected serial killer accused of murdering and dismembering dozens of women escaped from another police station in Nairobi.

After Collins Jumaisi escaped on August 20 along with twelve Eritrean prisoners, the police launched a major manhunt. However, he has not yet been found.
