Violent offender from Gourock dies in custody at HMP Low Moss

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed today that 47-year-old prisoner Marc Cox died at HMP Low Moss near Glasgow on Saturday 31 August.

On 19 August, Cox was sentenced to three years in prison at Greenock Sheriff Court after a jury found him guilty of three charges, including assaulting a complainant woman and a young child.

In Cox's case, an accidental death inquiry will be opened, which is a legal requirement in Scotland for all deaths in custody.

Following a trial in July, Cox was found guilty of a string of offences, including repeatedly choking the woman and restricting her breathing on several occasions between January 2009 and December 2014 at addresses in Inverclyde.

The telegraph reported last week that Cox, who previously lived in Cardwell Road, Gourock, grabbed the woman by the neck during one incident and squeezed until she lost consciousness.

In 2010, he also pushed a small child against a wall by the neck, risking his life.

Each of the victims was also given a restraining order, meaning they would not have been allowed to contact or communicate with them for the next three years.

His death is the 40th in Scottish custody this year and the fifth in Bishopbriggs Prison in 2024.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: “Every death, whether in prison or in our communities, is a tragedy for all who knew and supported the person.”

“Following the death of a person in our care, Police Scotland is notified and the incident is reported to the Public Prosecution Service.

“Investigations into fatal accidents will be conducted in due course.”
