Kenyan wanted for allegedly murdering his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu and then leaving her body in his car at Boston airport has been extradited

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kenyan man wanted for murder in Massachusetts has been extradited from the United States nearly a year after fleeing the country, authorities said Monday.

Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe is wanted for the suspected murder of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu, whose body was found in a car at Boston's Logan International Airport on October 31.

Kangethe left Kenya's capital Nairobi on Sunday and will face murder charges in Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday, Kenyan Attorney General Renson Ingonga said.

“I want to reiterate my commitment and support to the United States of America and in particular to the prosecution as they move to the next phase of the case,” Ingonga said on Monday.

The public prosecutor's office said the extradition order had already been issued by the court in July.

Kangethe, who has renounced his US citizenship, was involved in a dramatic escape from a police cell after being visited by his Kenyan lawyer in January. Disciplinary action was taken against four police officers who were on duty at the time of his escape. He was rearrested a week later and his extradition proceedings continued.

Kangethe's friend Mbitu worked as a nursing assistant in Halifax, Massachusetts. She was last seen on October 30 when she left work and was reported missing by her family.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mbitu left her workplace and traveled with Kangethe to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he lived, prosecutors in Kenya said during the extradition hearing.

Prosecutors said that personal belongings of the deceased were also found at Kangethe's home.
