Winner of the hot dog eating contest “Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi” on Netflix has been decided

There's nothing quite like the human drama of a sporting competition. A career rivalry was revived today when Netflix hosted a hot dog eating contest pitting two pseudo-sport legends against each other – and the result was a world record.

Joey Chestnut defeated Takeru Kobayashi in the streamer's live broadcast Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beefchoking down a record-breaking 83 hot dogs and buns during the 10-minute meal, while Kobayashi managed 66. The previous record was 76.

Chestnut took home the $100,000 prize as the two longtime rivals squared off for the first time in 15 years. The event was hosted by Nikki Garcia and Rob Riggle.

“I've been trying to do 80 hot dogs for years, and I never could have done it without Kobayashi,” Chestnut said of the festival. “He pushes me. We haven't always been nice to each other, but I love how we push each other to do our best.”

Netflix announced the contest in June, a day after Chestnut was disqualified from Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, which he had long dominated, because he accepted a sponsorship with plant-based Impossible Foods that turned the stomachs of the bosses at Major League Eating, which puts on the Nathan's show.

Chestnut had won the coveted Mustard Belt – awarded each July 4th on ESPN to the person who eats the most hot dogs – eight years in a row and 16 of the last 17 years, only surpassing it once, in 2015, when Matt Stonie took the title.

Chestnut earns an estimated $250,000 to $500,000 per year from competitive eating and endorsement deals. He also has his own line of condiments for hot dogs, brats, sausages, chicken wings and sandwiches.
